Students Show Support 4 Wigs 4 Kids
Hopatcong Arrow Schools aide Ms. Bonnie Coover shared a giving moment with Mrs. Lucille Pearce’s class on November 27 when she donated 12 inches of her hair to Wigs 4 Kids, an organization that supplies wigs to children and teens experiencing hair loss. The class demonstration was part of a giving project in Mrs. Pearce’s class.
Coover talked to Pearce about donating her hair to Wigs 4 Kids, because she had donated before and wanted to share the importance of the organization, as well as the spirit of giving. Hopatcong beautician, Ms. Marley Carrasquillo, cut Coover’s hair, so it could be donated to the organization.
Students watched as Marley gathered 12 inches of Coover’s hair in a ponytail, and then cut the full length. Marley pointed out that the hair, although a foot in length, must be added and mixed with other hair to get the desire wig length and volume.
Wigs 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that works to improve the self-esteem of children and teens that have lost their hair through various illnesses. Maggie Varney, Founder & CEO of the organization stated, "Wigs 4 Kids is thankful for the support received from Hopatcong, which is located in an area hit by Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of their own crisis where the school was shutdown for two and a half weeks, the students and staff still thought of the children served by Wigs 4 Kids and wished to raise proceeds to benefit them."
Anyone can donate hair to the Wigs 4 Kids, if willing, as Coover pointed out, to patiently grow the required length of hair for the wig. According to Coover, it took her about two years to grow her hair long enough to donate.
Pearce’s class also joined in the spirit of giving by baking and selling chocolate chip cookies; all proceeds from the bake sale were sent to Wigs 4 Kids.
