Santa will be having his hair cut at Go Green Salon, located inside the
Wigs 4 Kids Wellness Center to help raise funds to defray the cost of manufacturing a wig for a child in need.
We are really looking forward to having Santa visit our Wellness Center and Salon - how appropriate that Santa chose Wigs 4 Kids, knowing we're both all about the kids!

Harper Woods Firefighter-Paramedics' Fundraiser for Wigs 4 Kids!

The Harper Woods Firefighter-Paramedics IAFF Local 1188, in conjunction with the staff at Shores Inn, will be bar tending during the Red Wings game. All tips placed in their helmets and jars at the tables will directly benefit Wigs 4 Kids!

Rock the Runway - A Great Success!
Rock the Runway was a great success! Everyone who attended the concert and fashion show had a great time. The outfits were stunning and our kids enjoyed walking the runway! Wigs 4 Kids is appreciative to have the support of Empire 7 for this event.

Our thanks to Empire 7 for inviting Wigs 4 Kids to participate in a fashion show and rock concert called “Rock the Runway” on Saturday, December 10th at 7PM at the Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens. Yoga & Self-Defense Classes - Saturday, December 10th
 
Our final session of yoga and self-defense classes for our Ambassadors and their families this season is Saturday, December 10th from 2:15 – 3:15 at Anytime Fitness in Lakeshore Plaza (next to our Wellness Center).
We understand the holidays are a busy time for parents and yoga offers a great way to relax and help maintain inner calm. Ambassadors will enjoy improving their fitness and confidence alongside their peers through the self-defense portion of the class.
We have had a great response to these fun activities and would love to see our Ambassadors and their families there!

"Let the Child Dream" Movie Trailer Released
Many of you have asked when the movie "Let the Child Dream" will be in the theaters. The movie isn’t released yet, though we have just received the trailer. We find it deeply accurate and moving.
Wigs 4 Kids feels so fortunate that we had the opportunity to be involved with Miko and Paramore Films and appreciate him using his art form as an expression to share the experience that so many of our families go through.

Compassionate Friends Candlelight Service
Compassionate Friends will be holding their 4th annual candlelight service on December 11th at 7:00 PM at Veteran's Memorial Park in St. Clair Shores.
Wigs 4 Kids Founder & CEO Maggie Varney will be attending; representing and honoring all of our children that have become angels. It is open to the public. Any and all parents, siblings, families and friends that would like to participate are welcome.

Wigs 4 Kids Ambassador Alyssa Hosts a Fundraiser
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma, Wigs 4 Kids Ambassador Alyssa has bravely fought cancer three times. During chemo, Alyssa’s hair began to fall out and she chose to donate her remaining hair to Wigs 4 Kids. After receiving a wig, Alyssa decided to set up a lemonade stand with all proceeds benefitting our program so that we would be able to help more children & teens in need of our services.
Alyssa’s giving; humble spirit inspires all who are fortunate enough to know her.

2011 Sands Bash a Great Success!
Our thanks to Marty Sikes and the Nautimile organization for inviting Wigs 4 Kids to be a part of the 12th Annual Sands Bash. 100% of raffle proceeds went to

Benefit Dinner for Anthony Garrett
Wigs 4 Kids Ambassador Anthony Garrett is a local teen from Macomb County who has a form of osteosarcoma that is so rare, roughly 30 people are diagnosed with it.

Our 2011 Gala, Wigging Out 4 Wigs 4 Kids SOLD OUT! Thank you for your support! Many of the children and teens who received wigs & support services through the program were in attendance to enjoy food, fun and dancing to music by DJ, George Munger!
Surprises throughout the evening included a song by two of our wig recipients to Founder & CEO, Maggie Varney and also generous check presentations from
the family of one of our kids, White Castle, and the
Michigan Cosmetologists Association.
Our thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this event successful. We are grateful to Barrister Gardens for providing the venue for the gala and appreciate the media coverage we received at the hall from SCS Patch, Hour Detroit,

Lighting the Way Award! This honor was bestowed by White Castle upon Team Members who have made a commitment to making a difference in people’s lives. The winner was granted $10,000 to give to their charity of choice.
Being a cancer survivor, Cheryl is sensitive to the needs of our kids and her love for all children shows through her work with the organization. From serving as Vice Chair of our Board of Directors to cooking and serving White Castle sliders at our Open House for all our guests, Cheryl is willing to do whatever it takes to continue the mission of Wigs 4 Kids. We thank Cheryl for her ongoing support & dedication to our program. |
A Generous Gift That Keeps On Giving From One of our Local Children
Wigs 4 Kids recently received a generous gift from a local supporter named Sara. When asked by friends and family what she would like for her 11th birthday, she requested that funds be donated to our program to help children in need. This selfless, giving spirit has warmed our hearts and we wished to share Sara’s story with all of our supporters!
Sara has inspired her fellow teammates on the SCS Gators soccer league to host a fundraiser that will help them adopt their own child in our program!

The Michigan Creative Film Alliance completed filming of Beauty Queen at our Wellness Center yesterday to the sound of great applause and cheers! The footage will now be edited to prepare for the premiere in March 2012 and we will keep you posted on any developments as we hear of them! We wish them much success with this feature!

Hard to believe we would ever hear these words at our Wellness Center, yet that was the case this Sunday, when students from the Michigan Creative Film Alliance arrived to film scenes for Beauty Queen. The independent film tells the story of a young woman with alopecia who competes in beauty pageants to earn scholarships that will pay for her college education.

First Financial Services of Michigan Hosts a Golf Outing
& Donates Proceeds to Wigs 4 Kids!
 
Wigs 4 Kids thanks First Financial Services of Michigan, who recently hosted a golf outing and donated proceeds to our program! Participants enjoyed a day at Orchards Golf Course that included golf instruction from LPGA educators and a special guest appearance by LPGA star Nancy Lopez.
The generous donation made by First Financial Services will help us continue our mission of providing wigs & support services to children in need. We are so grateful to Mike Sarcheck & Jeff Furest for organizing this event and supporting our kids!

Wigs 4 Kids Chosen to Film Scenes
for the Independent Feature, Beauty Queen!
Wigs 4 Kids has been selected as the location of choice to film scenes for
Beauty Queen, an independent feature produced by the Michigan Creative Film Alliance!
Beauty Queen tells the story of a successful pageant queen who is diagnosed with alopecia, an auto-immune disorder that causes her hair to fall out. A month away from the biggest pageant of her life, she must learn to deal with her disease in order to win the pageant and the scholarship that will pay her college tuition.
We are so honored to be a part of this project as it will raise further awareness of what children and teens diagnosed with alopecia experience physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically.
One of our wig recipients, Jaeleen, was selected for a supporting role in the film as well, since she too has alopecia, wears a wig and competes in beauty pageants.
The film will premiere at the Detroit Film Theatre and will be entered in film festivals following the film's premiere.

Art Van Furniture kicked off its 2011 Million Dollar Charity Challenge by choosing four individuals from past recipients for the Art Van Hope Award.
Art Van stated “We are proud to recognize these amazing individuals this evening for their devotion and unwavering commitment to our community.”
Founder & CEO, Maggie Varney, of Wigs 4 Kids, a 2009 Charity Challenge Finalist, was honored with the award Tuesday evening during a special ceremony at the Art Van Furniture Store in Lansing. Each individual who was honored with the Hope Award was also given $5,000 in support of their cause.
“When you honor me, you honor the children I serve and validate the work that we do. It is a privilege to serve these children. I thank Art Van’s Million Dollar Charity Challenge for choosing Wigs 4 Kids as one of their charities of choice,” Varney said.

Flynn Middle School & Cousino High School Host Hair Drives for Wigs 4 Kids!
Wigs 4 Kids appreciates the generosity of Flynn Middle School as they hosted a hair drive for us on June 6th! We thank the stylists of Bianchi Salon & ESBI International for their time and dedication as they cut ponytails from generous hair donors!
  
The students & faculty of Cousino High School also held a hair drive for Wigs 4 Kids on June 6th! We are so grateful for their support as we continue our mission of providing free wigs and services to Michigan children in need! Wigs 4 Kids at the West Bloomfield Relay for Life!
 
Wigs 4 Kids attended the Relay for Life of West Bloomfield on June 4th to honor the memory of our Wigs 4 Kids Ambassador Haley and to show our support for the relay!
We’d also like to thank Style Salon for their hard work and dedication to the community as they hosted a cut-a-thon at the event. We received many hair donations from our wonderful donors and appreciate the opportunity to spread the word about the Wigs 4 Kids program and reach more children in need. |

Wigs 4 Kids marched in the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade on May 29th! Our thanks to the Parade Committee and the City of St. Clair Shores for inviting our kids to participate. "Let the Child Dream" Independent Film Developments
Paramore Films has recently released a promotional photo for the independent film "Let the Child Dream." Wigs 4 Kids was deeply touched and moved by this and other footage shot over the course of May 14th & May 15th at the Detroit Medical Center.
We congratulate filmmaker Miko Klubz on his efforts and are proud to be a part of this project which will raise awareness of childhood cancer and the need for support.
Wigs 4 Kids looks forward to the continuing development of "Let the Child Dream" and will keep you posted with more exciting news in the coming weeks!

Magic 105.1 Contest - Nominate Wigs 4 Kids for a Chance to Win $10,000!
Magic 105.1 Radio Station is asking listeners to logon to www.detroitmagic.com to state how they would spend $10,000 for charity. The contest runs weekdays through Thursday, May 20th and you must be a Magic Family Member to enter (online registration is free).
All entries must include the entrant’s name, address and telephone number, and the name of a bona fide 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
10 finalists will be chosen by judges on May 23rd. Listeners can vote online at www.detroitmagic.com for 1 of 10 finalists until 12PM on June 2nd. Everyone that votes will have a chance to receive a $1,000 prize. One winner will be chosen at random at the conclusion of the contest, from all eligible Magic Family Members who voted during the contest period. Voting is limited to one vote per person and email address.

Kiwanis Kids Day: Fun at the Farm!
Wigs 4 Kids’ long-time supporter, the Lac Ste. Claire Kiwanis group, is hosting “Kids Day: Fun at the Farm” and has invited all children in our program to participate!

"Let the Child Dream" Filming at the Wellness Center!
 
On May 7th between 12PM - 4PM, Wigs 4 Kids filmed interviews, trailers and scenes for the upcoming independent film "Let the Child Dream" produced by Paramore Films. Delaney Forrest got her head shaved to prepare for the lead role of Bryn, a young woman courageously undergoing cancer treatment.

Wigs 4 Kids Chosen For Independent Film - "Let the Child Dream"
Wigs 4 Kids has been chosen to receive national exposure in an independent film produced by Paramore Films! The feature, titled “Let the Child Dream” is a story of a young girl bravely confronting leukemia. The actress playing the role will be getting her head shaved at the Wigs 4 Kids Wellness Center & Salon on May 7th. Filming is set to begin shortly after, on May 15th.
“Wigs 4 Kids is very excited about this opportunity to share our mission with this large audience,” said Maggie Varney, Wigs 4 Kids CEO. “We have provided wigs and services at no charge to more than 500 Michigan children experiencing hair loss since we opened our doors in 2003.” |

Wigs 4 Kids Chili Cook-off
Wigs 4 Kids Chili Cook-off was a huge success! We had over 200 guests at our Wellness Center on Friday, March 18, 2011 for a night of great food, fun and entertainment! Three winners were awarded trophies for their unique recipes.
Our thanks to Mary and Mike Sarcheck of First Financial Services of Michigan for sponsoring the event, and to all of our volunteers, contestants and guests for supporting the Wigs 4 Kids program! We would also like to thank Woods Trophies for donating the prizes given to our top chefs

Cook 4 a Cause! Wigs 4 Kids is Hosting a Chili Cook-off!
Wigs 4 Kids is having a chili cook-off on March 18th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at our Wellness Center! Be a friend and bring a friend to this event and enjoy a night of food, fun and great conversation!
There is no entry fee for those wishing to donate chili and admission is as follows for attendees:

2011 Newsletter Preview - Ambassador Jaeleen Davis Wins Medal for Prettiest Hair
 
Fifteen year old ambassador Jaeleen Davis spent most of her childhood singing, acting, and participating in beauty pageants until diagnosed with alopecia at age 7 which changed her life completely. Jaeleen’s hair quickly began falling out, and within a year she was searching for wigs to help her fit in with her peers.
After trying several store-bought synthetic wigs which did not look or feel real, she was pleased to hear about the Wigs 4 Kids program. Jaeleen became a recipient and received her first human-hair wig.
Jaeleen immediately felt her confidence and love for life restored. She has recently returned to competing and was crowned Grand Winner for Prettiest Hair at the Sunburst Beauty Pageant; judges unaware that she had a wig on!
About her experience with Wigs 4 Kids, Jaeleen says:
“It’s an amazing feeling to know that you are someone and that you are beautiful no matter what.”
Current Cancer Statistics
* There are several types of childhood cancer, and survival rates are different for each. In general, the overall five-year relative survival rate is steadily increasing.
* On average, 12,500 children and teens will be diagnosed with some form of cancer each year in the United States.
* Currently, there are 30,000-40,000 children being treated for cancer in America. It strikes children from all ethnic backgrounds and every level of financial income.
* Cancer remains the number one disease killer of America’s children - more than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Asthma and AIDS combined.
* Only 3% of the National Cancer Institute Budget goes toward Pediatric Cancer Research.
* Today, up to 75% of the children with cancer can be cured.
